Electric car mileage rates

There are two completely different HMRC rates for electric cars, and which one you use depends on who owns the car. Your own EV: 55p a mile. A company EV: 7p (home charging) or 15p (public charging).

Which rate applies to you?

Your own EVCompany EV
Rate55p first 10,000 miles, then 25p7p home / 15p public

The approved mileage rate does not care what powers the car. A Tesla you own earns the same 55p a mile as a diesel estate โ€” and because charging at home costs far less per mile than petrol, an EV driver keeps more of it.

How HMRC works out the company EV rate

The advisory electricity rate is a cost-per-mile estimate. For the rates from 1 September 2026, HMRC used an average efficiency of 3.59 miles per kWh, weighted by car sales:

Charging atCost per kWhCost per mileAdvisory rate
Home24.47p6.81p7p
Public charger54.00p15.02p15p

If you charge in both places, the mileage can be split fairly between the two rates. An employer can pay more than the advisory rate if they can show the real cost per mile is higher โ€” for example, if you rely on expensive rapid chargers.

Has the electric rate changed?

The home rate has been 7p for the last several quarters. The public charging rate was 14p for 1 December 2025 to 28 February 2026 and has been 15p since. Petrol and diesel company cars use the advisory fuel rates by engine size.

Hybrids

Plug-in and self-charging hybrids are treated as petrol or diesel cars for advisory fuel rates, using their engine size. If the hybrid is your own car, the standard 55p approved mileage rate applies.

Self-employed with an EV

Sole traders can use simplified expenses at the same 55p a mile for an electric car. Whether that beats claiming actual costs depends on how much you paid for the car โ€” EVs often qualify for generous capital allowances, so it is worth comparing both before you commit.
